Title – “Talking Heads: Language in Context of Brain and Cognition”
Content:
How our mind and brain computes “language” is still a mystery to the scientist. Without effort we are able to recall particular words and combine them in endlessly diverse ways to express our facts, ideas and feelings. In particular, our discussion will take into account recent neuroimaging results that provide further information about the temporal and spatial parameters involved in language processing. Moreover, different kind of evidence such as genetic, neurological, cognitive and linguistic data will be presented to draw a picture of the human language system that seems to challenge the classical view of the neurological organization of the human language system. It is concluded that reflex-like linguistic processes are the product of innate structures associated with the uniqueness of human cognition.
Profile:
Dr. Dieter Hillert is a Research Scientist in the Dept. of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego. He has expertise in Theoretical Linguistics, Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Neuroscience, and has published widely in such journals as Brain and Language, Brain and Behavioral Sciences and the Journal of Neurolinguistics. He will be in Japan throughout the fall conducting research as part of the JSPS invited scholars program.
This promises to be a challenging and stimulating presentation, and it will be a nice chance for teachers here in Kochi to learn from a guy who obviously knows his stuff.
